Campaigning in assembly polls 2011 hit a new low on Thursday with Trinamool MP and Union minister of state for shipping Mukul Roy calling Gautam Deb a joker in the Left Front circus.

Roy, in his enthusiasm, however, got some facts wrong. “Jokers are entertainers and appear after performances by lions and tigers. They cool down the temperature after the tension of the big cat show,” he said. Drawing an analogy with Left rule, which may end on May 13, Roy said, “The people are fed up with political games played by Biman Bose and Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee (The big two in the Left Front) which has increased political tension. The Left Front introduced Gautam Deb, as a joker in a special role.”

The government, for a long time, has banned performances by animals. Now, only animals such as elephants, dogs, cats and hippopotamuses are allowed for certain acts but soon an amendment proposed by the Animal Welfare Board, Chennai will ban them too.

Roy though was spot on with his analysis. The great Indian circus has hit a speed breaker after the ban and like the Left Front, is past its expiry date. The minister was campaigning for Trinamool candidate Gadhadhar Hazra who will be contesting from Nanoor.

Describing Left Front rule as a series of killings from Nanoor, Singur (alleged rape and murder of Tapasi Malik) and Nandigram, Roy recalled his boss’ defusing of tension after Suchpur.

The minister also accused the Left Front of misusing funds for gram panchayat, panchayat samiti and zilla parishad.

Roy also slammed the Marxist government for insinuating that black money is powering the Trinamool campaign. “After bankrupting the state, they are accusing us of black money,” he said.
