The state government is trying to tie up with the famed Harvard University in the US, for programmes ranging from faculty training, to leadership initiatives for its administrators. Talks began three weeks ago, when members of Harvard’s South Asia Initiative visited the Mumbai
University.

A delegation, led by state minister for higher and technical education Rajesh Tope, visited the university last week. The exploratory tour was aimed at taking the discussions forward.

“We discussed many aspects such as faculty training, leadership programmes and resource mobilisation to raise funds. We attended their classes and met several heads of departments,” said Tope.

The government will now send a detailed proposal to Harvard.

Apart from leadership programmes for members of legislative assembly and members of parliament, the state also wants Harvard to design a training programme for teachers, which they will be implemented in training institutes here.

The government will also look at programmes for postgraduate teachers and PhD guides in their universities.
