Gopinath Munde's daughter performs his last rites

One of the stalwarts of Maharashtra politics and Union cabinet minister Gopinath Munde was cremated on Wednesday in his village Parli with full state honours.

His eldest daughter, Pankaja, lit his funeral pyre. Pankaja is a BJP MLA.

Many senior Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, including  Rajnath Singh and LK Adwani, were present during Munde's funeral.

Munde died on Tuesday apparently of multiple internal injuries suffered during a road accident in New Delhi.

Munde, 64, was on his way to the airport for a victory rally in Maharashtra, when his Maruti SX4 was hit by a Tata Indica.

A sea of supporters came to attend his last rites and police had a tough time controlling the crowd. A few even shouted slogans and pelted stones and Munde's daughter had to ask them to calm down.

Earlier, Lok Sabha was adjourned till Thursday on its first sitting after paying tributes to the leader.

Before adjourning for the day, the House observed a silence for two minutes as a mark of respect to Munde.

Lok Sabha bulletin said that in the wake of Munde's death on Tuesday, his seat has fallen vacant.
