A murder accused was dragged out of an operation theatre by a nearly 100-strong mob that thrashed him to death while his police escorts watched for nearly 15 minutes.

Ravi Kumar, undergoing surgery in police protection at Hajipur's Sadar Hospital, died in Patna Medical College.

Vaishali Superintendent of Police Parasnath has dismissed four home guards and suspended a sub-inspector for failing to check the attack on Ravi.

Eyewitnesses said over 100 people forcibly entered the operation theatre and pulled Ravi out. They beat him with sticks and threw stones for 15 minutes. He writhed in pain, his hands tied up, till a Station House Officer rushed to the spot with Special Auxiliary Police personnel.

Ravi had suffered multiple injuries on Friday when he was beaten up by residents of Pokhraha locality in Vaishali. They had caught him with a sharp-edged weapon, with which he is believed to have stabbed his roommate Om Prakash, killing him.

The open wounds he suffered the previous day were being stitched when the mob forced into the OT on Saturday. The Vaishali SP said Ravi was referred to Patna Medical College and Hospital. "A case will be registered against the people involved in the attack," he said.
