Police identified the Mohanlalganj gang rape and murder victim on Friday and claimed that she was subjected to cruelty as a result of extreme hate. The suspect is a person known to the woman who took her out on Wednesday night after which her body was found on Thursday morning, police said.
Additional director general (ADG) Sutapa Sanyal said that police had some substantial clues. At least four police teams were working to solve the case at the earliest. The ADG has been asked by the Uttar Pradesh government to supervise the probe.
Sanyal said: “We have clues. That is why we have the confidence (that we would get a breakthrough). We will tell you all appropriate things at appropriate time. May be Saturday.”
Meanwhile, UP governor Ram Naik has sought a report from the state government on the gang rape and murder incident and progress in investigations.
The woman, 35, was found naked with injury marks on head, face and private parts in a primary school in Balsinghkheda village of Mohanlalganj tehsil of Lucknow district. The postmortem confirmed that her death happened due to multiple haemorrhages and that she was sexually assaulted and subjected to extreme cruelty.
The woman was working as a lab attendant in a premier medical institute of the state capital since 2011, after the death of her husband in 2010.
“Her identification also gave a new turn to the crime and it is suspected that she was subjected to cruelty, sexually assaulted and murdered to take revenge over some issue,” said a senior police officer.
The police officer said a man who was known to her is the key suspect. He said at least five persons, who were frequent callers on the suspect’s mobile number, have been questioned.
He said she had gone on duty and had left her work place at around 5pm on Wednesday. She went to her house, nearly two km from the institute, and again left the house at around 9pm after receiving call from a man known to her. She had told her children that she was going out for some work and would return in two hours.
Her father, who stays in east Uttar Pradesh, identified her at the KGMU mortuary.
