A youth was shot dead and two others critically wounded by a group of armed men in Rampuri area of Muzaffarnagar district on Sunday night.

The police said Mukul Sharma and his friends Sachin Tyagi and Shashank Tyagi were riding a bike when the assailants in an Alto car hit them from behind.

The assailants then got down and shot at the trio from a close range, killing Mukul on the spot. The other two have been admitted to hospital for serious gunshot wounds.

On Monday morning, a big crowd demonstrating against the shooting blocked Delhi-Haridwar road and clashed with the police that fired in air and resorted to baton charge to control the mob.

Demanding arrest of the culprits, the protesters demanded Rs. 25 lakh compensation for the dead and the injured and a government job each for one of their kin.

Muzaffarnagar senior superintendent of police Hari Narayan Singh said old rivalry, not the recent communal strife, was the motive behind the crime.

Meanwhile, two men, Sachin and his friend Sushil, were sent to jail on charges of raping a married girl who had come to stay with her relatives in Jogiakhera village that is currently hosting scores of families displaced by communal clashes.

Singh said after being caught by some villagers with the accused, Sachin, the girl accused him of rape to save herself from humiliation. Rumours that she had been raped by two youths from another community died down after police clarification.
