More than 200 goats and sheep were sacrificed in Nainital on Friday disregarding the Nainital high court judgment of December 2011 that forbids animal sacrifice in Uttarakhand temples and protests of animal activists.

Activists have in fact alleged that the local administration colluded with devotees in killing animals.

"What we saw at on Friday was a total failure of the administration in Nainital. We had been reminding the administration for one month to gear up for the upcoming animal sacrifice on Nandashtami. But almost 200 animals were butchered at the temple located barely 20 meters away from Nainital lake," said Gauri Maulekhi of the animal welfare organization People For Animals, Uttarakhand.

According to animal activists security forces were deployed in the morning but they disappeared soon after. "When the crowd gathered there were some 500 people and the police could do little," said Maulekhi who was present at the temple.

The High Court had in its order clearly said that slaughtering of animals for other than human consumption was illegal.
