Additional general secretary of National Conference (NC), Mustafa Kamal, has said that his party didn't support Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi as the PM candidate.

A local news agency had quoted Kamal as saying that National Conference would support Modi if he became the Prime Minister of the country. "We will support him and develop a harmonious relationship with him,'' he was quoted by the agency.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Kamal, however, said he was quoted out of context. "How can we support a party which has thrown our greater autonomy resolution into the dustbin. This can never happen," Kamal said.

He said the National Conference believed in strengthening secular politics. "And history has shown that the Congress is the most secular party and we will continue to support it," he said.

The National Conference in the past had been part of the BJP-led NDA. But chief minister, Omar Abdullah, who was the then junior minister for external affairs, had tarmed the alliance a 'mistake'.

Kamal said the BJP was "communal" and responsible for "many carnages" in the country. He also said that the BJP was responsible for creating the People's Democratic Party in Jammu and Kashmir.
