Four members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) were arrested early on Monday morning for allegedly pasting posters on public property and at restricted places. Police said the posters were related to a rally scheduled at Jantar Mantar on August 3.

The arrests came 10 days after three AAP members were arrested on the alleged charges of pasting inflammatory posters at public places in Jamia Nagar.

In the latest incident, AAP members Rajesh Kumar, Gulshan, Deepak and Rajinder Kumar were caught putting up posters in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar at about 3 am on Monday. They were nabbed by a police party out for night patrolling. They were later granted bail.

BS Jaiswal, deputy commissioner of police (south), confirmed the arrests and said the four were booked under various sections of the Prevention of Defacement of Property Act, 2007 and Press and Registration of Books Act, 1867.

“We seized the vehicle and the posters kept inside it. They were brought to the police station where a case was registered against them. After sometime, some AAP workers arrived there and termed the arrests illegal, saying pasting posters was not a crime. We clarified that the four were caught pasting posters at public places,” a senior police officer said.

AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal said in a tweet that the volunteers were pasting posters that said a rally was scheduled for August 3 at Jantar Mantar demanding fresh elections in Delhi.

“Police found these posters ‘objectionable’ and arrested four AAP volunteers. BJP nervous and misusing police?” Kejriwal tweeted.

Another AAP leader said, “Other political parties also paste posters but why do police not take any action against them?”
