As self-styled 'godman' Asaram Bapu continues to face criticism over the alleged sexual assault charges levelled against him by a 16-year-old girl, his son Narayan Sai has come out in defence of his father slamming the girl as 'mentally unstable', according to media reports.

In a bizarre statement at a religious gathering (satsang) in Rajkot in Gujarat, he said, "The girl who is levelling allegations is mentally unstable, the allegations on Asaram Bapu are false."0

He added that Asaram's ashram had already informed the girl's parents about her mental condition.

This statement came after the victim's father alleged that he had been getting threatening calls over the case. "I will pursue the case to its logical conclusion," he said.

Earlier, the victim had told the police in her statement that she was threatened by Asaram Bapu to remain silent about the incident.

Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Wednesday met home minister Sushilkumar Shinde to discuss the case. The home ministry has asked the Rajasthan government to file a reply on the allegations against Asaram.
