A day after the Congress government in Delhi neutralised the power tariff hike within hours of the DERC announcing revised rates, the Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced an agitation against the "anti-people" decision.

Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel said the party would make it an issue in the coming poll campaign. "We will hold a massive rally at Ramlila ground on August 11 to demand a rollback of the hike," Goel said.

The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission on Friday increased power tariff by 5%, which was neutralised by the Delhi government by announcing a subsidy to consumers who consume up to 400 units.

"The subsidy being offered by the Delhi government will go from the state exchequer, from the taxes the government has collected from all of us. Also, we know for sure that the tariff will go up by at least 300% immediately after the elections. The Delhi government is trying to make fool of all us," Goel said.

He said the BJP will hold candlelight marches across the city, including outside the Chief Minister's residence.

The Delhi BJP has already announced that the tariff will be slashed by 30% if it comes to power after the assembly elections in November this year,

"We will bring in more power discoms and create competition. It will automatically bring down the tariff," Goel said.
