Cong distances itself from Beni’s spat with Mulayam

As war of words between Union minister Beni Prasad Verma and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav escalated, the Congress on Monday sought to maintain distance from the spat, describing it as “personal issues” between two individuals.

However, party spokesperson Renuka Chowdhary called Verma a “senior man and a seasoned politician”.

Referring to Shivpal Yadav allegation that Verma “smuggles opium and uses charas”, she said: “As far as new allegations are concerned, those who have said so should also substantiate them. Merely making statements won’t do.”

When the controversy had first erupted with Beni alleging that the SP chief had links with terrorists, Congress had snubbed him saying the party does not share the view.
