A 23-year-old Spanish national was allegedly molested by an inebriated man at south Delhi’s Lodi Garden on Sunday evening. The accused was overpowered  by some policemen who were patrolling the garden and later arrested.

The accused has been identified as Giri, 24, a resident of Badarpur in southeast Delhi. He works at a luxury hotel in New Delhi district area. A city court on Monday sent him to Tihar jail for 14 days.

A senior police officer said the incident took place at about 5.45pm when two Spanish women were out sightseeing. Inside the park, the inebriated man arrived and grabbed one of them.

“The victim screamed for help and somehow managed to free herself. She started running and the accused followed her,” said the senior police officer.

Hearing her scream, some police personnel who were patrolling the park immediately rushed to help. “They chased the man and overpowered him. The Spanish women were asked to come to the police station to file a complaint, which they did,” said the police officer.

The accused was sent to a nearby government hospital for medical examination, which confirmed that he was drunk. The Spanish embassy has been informed about the incident.

The Spanish women arrived in India on July 6 on a tourist visa and had arrived in Delhi from Agra on Friday.
