A day after a Manipuri woman alleged harassment by her landlord in south Delhi’s RK Puram area, another woman from the northeastern state was molested by three men in the Kishangarh area near Vasant Kunj on Thursday.
The matter came to light on Sunday when the police arrested the three accused acting on a complaint by the 38-year-old victim and her husband.
The accused have been identified as Sumit Chhetri, 24, Hubert, 28, and Arun Anthony, 26. All of them are local residents and they were identified and traced by the local beat constable with the help of the physical description given by the victim.
The three were produced before a city court that sent them to Tihar Jail, said police. The motorcycle which the three were riding at the time of commission of the crime has also been seized.
A senior police officer said the woman lives with her family in Kishangarh area. On the of the incident, she was walking towards her home when the three accused, riding a motorcycle, allegedly accosted her and tried to pull her clothes.
The woman in her complaint also alleged that the trio touched her inappropriately after which she raised an alarm.
“When the woman started screaming for help, some locals residents rushed to her help. Seeing people rushing towards them, the trio fled the place. The woman returned home and informed her husband. Later, both of them approached the Vasant Kunj North police station,” said the senior officer.
The woman was taken to a government hospital for a medical examination and a local NGO volunteers were roped in to help her record her statement. On the basis of her complaint, a case was registered and investigation was taken up by the local police, added the senior officer.
On Sunday, two Manipuri women were allegedly molested by their landlord following an argument over the issue of using the water pump in south Delhi’s Mohammadpur near RK Puram. The accused, Mahender Tokas, 40, was arrested after a case was registered against him.
In view of the rising crimes against people from the Northeastern states in the Capital, the Delhi Police had recently launched a dedicated helpline to assist victims.
