Chief minister Sheila Dikshit blamed natural forces — a cyclone and the monsoon — for the increase in the price of onions in Delhi.

“Heavy rain in some onion-producing states have affected harvest as well as supply lines,” she said. “The supply has now improved and the price should soon stabilise,” Dikshit added.

The chief minister said hoarding, a factor frequently blamed for hikes in vegetable prices, was not possible in Delhi and raised fingers at the BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh. “Hoarding is rampant there.” She was, however, quick to add that the price of onions had risen across the country.

The Delhi government, she said, had intervened in the past to provide relief to people. “The Delhi government has tried to provide the commodity at a reasonable price through various means.”

Development minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said the supply of onions had begun improving. “The worst is over,” he said.

BJP leaders Vijay Kumar Malhotra and Vijay Goel blamed the government squarely for the rise in prices. “The Congress government... has dampened the festive spirit,” Goel, the party’s Delhi chief, said.
