The Directorate of Education (DoE) has directed schools to start admitting children into nursery classes as soon as possible.

As per the Delhi High Court orders, DoE has said that the first draw of lots for applicants with 70 points is valid, directing schools to admit children whose names have appeared in these lots.

The draw of lots of those schools that was conducted after the directorate scrapped the transfer points will also be valid. Those who had secured 70 points or more were eligible for admission.

The schools will now have to start admitting students as soon as possible, even on holidays, if need be, to make sure that all children are enrolled before Wednesday, April 9.

As per the court’s orders, all children whose names have been selected in more than one school will have to pick one before April 9. If parents get the child admitted in more than one school at the same time, their candidature from all schools will be cancelled.

The directorate also clarified that schools will not consider waitlisted candidates for admission till April 16, the next date of the court hearing. Also, no new draw of lots will be conducted.

One directive that will bring a smile to the faces of both parents and activists is the mandatory uploading of all admission data on the DoE website so that parents can be given a fair idea of the number of vacant seats. The data has to be uploaded by April 12.

While the DoE has given schools the permission to start the academic session by April 15, it is highly unlikely that the schools will be able to fill all their seats by that time and begin the academic session.

Since a majority of parents apply to at least five schools, the chances of their names being duplicated in the lists of various schools rises. Subsequently, some seats do remain vacant after the first list which necessitates a second list.
