First woman chief justice of Delhi HC to take charge on Monday

Justice G Rohini will assume charge as the new chief justice of the Delhi high court from Monday.


Monday’s change of head will also make the 59-year-old the first woman chief justice of the Delhi HC.

Justice Rohini will fill in the post after Justice NV Ramana vacated it in February following his elevation as a judge of the Supreme Court. Justice Rohini’s name was recently cleared by President Pranab Mukherjee after the Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam recommended her.

With the addition of Justice Rohini, the strength of women judges at the Delhi HC will increase to 10. She is likely to stay for a period of about three years, if not elevated to the Supreme Court during the tenure.

The registrar general of Delhi HC Sangita Dhingra Sehgal confirmed that Justice Rohini, the senior most judge of the Andhra Pradesh HC, will take the charge as the new Chief Justice on Monday.

Justice Rohini, born on April 14, 1955 at Visakhapatnam, is a science graduate from Osmania University. She obtained degree in Law from the College of Law, Andhra University.

After passing out of law college, Justice Rohini initially joined the Andhra Pradesh Law Journals as a reporter. Later, she began active practice, mostly in the Andhra Pradesh HC and also in the administrative tribunals and civil courts.

As an advocate she appeared in various types of cases including civil, criminal, labour and service. In 1995, she was appointed as a government pleader in the HC of Andhra Pradesh and continued till she was elevated to the bench. She was appointed as an additional judge of the HC of Andhra Pradesh in 2001 and made a permanent judge in 2002.
