Four Italian marines, key witness to the killing of two Indian fishermen off Kerala coast allegedly by two of their colleagues, have refused to come to India to join the National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe.
“These four marines — Voglino Renato, Andronico Massimo, Fontano Antonio and Conte Alessandro — instead have suggested that the NIA can record their statement either through video conferencing or by sending a team of NIA to Italy. Another option given by them is of sending a questionnaire to them. We have sought opinion of the law ministry on the issue,” said a senior home ministry official.
The NIA has so far refused to accept the proposal sent by four marines witness to the incident.
“Italy had given assurance to arrange for the presence as and when required for investigation. They cannot go back on their word,” said an official source.
