A Delhi court has sentenced an HIV-positive man and his wife to seven years in jail for robbery and house trespassing. The court said there were no grounds for leniency on account of the couple’s health since such crimes were on the rise and needed to be curbed.

Additional sessions judge Yashwant Kumar handed down the jail term to the couple after holding them guilty of offences punishable under various sections of the IPC including robbery, trespassing, and robbery with an attempt to cause death. The court also imposed a fine Rs. 3,000 each on them.

According to the police, on July 11, 2011 the couple had forced their way into the complainant’s house — where the woman convict had worked earlier as a maid — and had robbed Rs. 8,000 in cash and a ring.

The police also contended that the couple had assaulted the complainant and her family members during the robbery. The woman was apprehended while trying to flee. The police arrested her husband on the same day.
