At 87, Congress leader ND Tiwari became a dad for the first time as a DNA test established on Friday that he was the biological father of 32-year-old Rohit Shekhar, a lawyer who has been fighting the paternity suit for five years.

“Tiwari is reported to be the biological father of Rohit Shekhar and Ujjwala Sharma the biological mother”, justice Reva Khetrapal of the Delhi high court declared after going through the DNA test report in a jam-packed courtroom.

This is the first high-profile paternity suit involving a senior politician in India and could inspire more such cases as biological children are entitled to a share in parental property.

Immediately after the declaration, Shekhar said, “It is the victory of truth. I moved court after being humiliated and denied recognition as a son.”

But Tiwari told media in Dehradun that it was a “conspiracy”. He said, “Due to my simplicity, at this point of my age, my trusted people hatched a conspiracy against me in a planned way. I have no remorse against them. My sympathy is with Rohit Shekhar.”

Tiwari, a former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, was forced to resign as the Andhra Pradesh governor in 2009 amid allegations of sexual misconduct following a sting operation by TV channels.

Earlier, Shekhar said, “Now it’s up to my mother (Ujjwala Sharma) to decide on further course of action.

Tiwari will have to compensate for the mental pain and agony that we suffered all these years. He will have to compensate for the trouble he has put us through." Meanwhile, the Congress sought to distance itself from the controversy with party spokesperson Rashid Alvi saying, “This is someone's personal issue. The party has nothing to do with it”.

But leader of the Janta Dal (U) and NDA convener Sharad Yadav congratulated Sharma, saying the DNA test result had opened the way for thousands of such women and children.

Tiwari earlier appealed to the high court to stop the report from being made public, but a two-judge bench rejected his plea.
