A 24-year-old Manipuri woman was molested and her male cousin beaten up for protesting against racist slurs in northwest Delhi’s Model Town on Friday night. The area is home to hundreds of outstation students studying or employed in Delhi University (DU).

The woman, a DU undergraduate student, was walking to her rented accommodation in Old Gupta Colony with her cousin around 10 pm on Friday when two local goons passed racist and vulgar remarks at them, obstructing their path.

“The men, Kamal and Manpreet, allegedly groped her after trying to expose their private parts. When her cousin tried to intervene, they assaulted him severely,” said a police officer.

As news of the incident spread, around 250 students from the Northeast and members of civil society groups reached the crime spot before marching down to the Model Town police station.

They subsequently engaged in rioting and damaged public property, police claimed.

The students refuted the charge, accusing the police of stone-pelting and manhandling female students. The two suspects have been identified and arrested immediately, said RS Krishnia, joint commissioner (northern range). Manpreet was apprehended from the crime scene, the police said. A medical examination of the woman has been conducted.
