It looks like the sluggish monsoon will miss its Sunday date with Delhi. The Met department said the rains are expected to hit the city either on July 2 or 3 – four days behind schedule.

“The monsoon is likely to arrive here by the middle of next week,” said a Met official. The monsoon has been stuck in its tracks the last 12 days but the Met said that a western disturbance is likely to help advance the rains to the hilly parts of North India in the first week of July.

According to the weatherman, the city may experience partly cloudy sky on Sunday with possible thunder showers in some parts of the city. The maximum and minimum may settle around 40 and 29 degree Celsius.

Meanwhile, sultry weather conditions continued on Saturday with Delhi experiencing a high of 39.6 degree Celsius – two notches above normal. The minimum temperature was 29 degree Celsius, one degree above normal.

Humidity levels ranged from 71% to 45% but no rain was reported.

Locals are anxiously waiting for rains hoping it will bring down temperature.“It had become slightly cloudy during the day, which raised our hopes. In fact, we were hoping for a fun, cool Sunday,” said Kapil Sharma, a banker. So far, barely 9% of the country has seen normal rainfall as the monsoon stopped advancing on June 15.

This June has been one of the driest in 100 years.
