Pay at least Rs. 200 for Delhi Metro card top-up

Delhi Metro has increased the minimum value for top up of smart cards from Rs. 100 to Rs. 200. The initial add value on purchase of new smart cards has also been increased from Rs. 50 to Rs. 100. So you will have to shell out Rs. 150 for a new smart card, of which Rs. 50 will be kept aside as security which is refundable.

The changes will take effect from Wednesday.

“Most smart card users are regular travellers. With the opening of Rapid Metro and more corridors of Phase 3, the maximum fare required for travel will increase as commuters will cover more distance. Increasing the minimum add value will help commuters as they won’t have to stand in queues frequently to get their recharge their cards frequently,” a DMRC spokesperson said.

More than 70% of the 24 lakh Metro travellers are smart card users. Apart from metro, the smart card can also be used in Gurgaon’s Rapid Metro, some of the feeder buses, at some Metro parking lots and to buy books at national book trust stalls at some of the major stations.

Officials said the Delhi Metro is going to add 400 buses to its fleet of feeder buses soon. These buses will have the provision of providing payment through smart cards. Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung has already given his approval for making the smart card a multi-modal card which the commuters will be able to use to travel in DTC and cluster buses.

But officials said that in case of web top-up, the minimum add-value amount will continue to be Rs. 100 and commuters will be able to top up the card in multiples of `50.
