In a rare political review of the performance of the nine-year old UPA government, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has started a series of meetings on key ministries.

While the Congress is perceived to be focusing on social sector initiatives to retain power in the next general election, Gandhi’s meetings are focusing on core sectors like infrastructure, industry and manufacturing.

This latest series of meetings are held at Gandhi’s official residence at 12, Tughlaq Lane and some key lieutenants of the Congress deputy chief also participate during the deliberations. Party sources suggest these reviews are aimed to take stock of the pending task in each sector and also to help prepare the party’s campaign on the achievements.

According to some sources who attended these meetings, Gandhi stressed the need to aggressively showcase each sector’s performance during UPA’s two terms in power.

On October 11, for instance, Gandhi was given a presentation on the performance and achievement of the roads and highways sector during UPA’s term.

The presentation ran over two hours. Earlier, Gandhi was also given presentation by the urban development and industry ministry.

Congress insiders cite these meetings as another facet of Gandhi’s increasing interest in governance and policies in the run up to the polls, although he has shunned several offers to join the union cabinet.

The Congress is also preparing a long list of reforms measures and its impact to highlight them in its 2014 manifesto. That list too, categorizes reforms into two sections: finance and infrastructure.
