The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Karnataka government to immediately release 2.44 tmc feet of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, which had demanded 12 tmc feet of water.

A three-judge bench headed by Justice RM Lodha, which had allowed the release of 2 tmc feet water three days ago, increased the amount of water to be provided to Tamil Nadu by 0.44 tmc feet on the recommendation of the Central Water Commission (CWC).

The bench issued the order after going through the report submitted by an expert committee of the CWC, which said that only 10% of the cultivated land in Tamil Nadu needs water.

But it did not agree to Tamil Nadu’s demand for 12 tmc feet of water.

The CWC said 50% of the arable land has already been cultivated, and 40% is on the verge of being cultivated. Only the remaining 10% requires water.

“The interest of justice would be met if Karnataka is directed to release 2.44 tmc feet of water,” it said.
