Three armed men robbed two elderly women, who were taking a morning walk, and shot at a bank manager when he tried to resist them in the Lajpat Nagar area on Thursday.
According to the police, the incident took place around 5:30am near a service lane in E block. The victims — Mithlesh Sharma, wife of a retired additional director general of CRPF, and Sheela Sarkar, wife of a retired senior air force official, were taking a stroll outside their houses when the incident took place.
The police said the culprits, aged between 20 and 25 years, were at large.
“The three men were not residents of the area. They cornered us and robbed us of our jewellery and mobile phones at gunpoint,” said Sharma. She added that they had not come on any vehicle.
“They frisked us to see if we were hiding anything. After robbing us, they went to the other side of the lane and threatened our neighbour Pradeep Pundir, a bank manager, to part with his belongings,” said Sarkar.
Pundir was going to his office in Bulandshahr. “One of the robbers was asking his accomplices to hire an autorickshaw as he was tired. Suddenly, they pointed a gun towards me and asked me to hand over all my belongings to them. I even managed to catch one of the culprits. But to get their accomplice freed, one of the accused shot at me,” he said.
Hearing Pundir’s cries for help, other residents arrived on the spot. However, the trio managed to flee. The police said Pundir had sustained a bullet in the head and was admitted to a nearby hospital.
The police said while fleeing, the trio tried to rob another woman outside her house.
Superintendent of police (SP) G Muniraj said that he had called a meeting of station and circle officers to frame a strategy to nab robbers. “We have intensified morning patrolling and deployed police patrol vehicles in the area,” he said.
