After racial slurs triggering the murder of Nido Taniam (also spelled Tania), investigations into the murder of the 35-year-old employee of a sweetmeat shop by an armed security guard in central Delhi last evening pointed out regional bias.

Senior police officials privy to the investigation said Neeraj Kumar had pulled the trigger on Satyendra, a jalebi server at the Bangla Sweet House in Gole Market who died at the Lady Hardinge hospital on Wednesday, not only for being made to wait , but for referring to him derogatorily as a ‘Bihari’.

“Kumar, during his interrogation about the events preceding the murder, has revealed that he had got angry at Satyendra making a regional slur,” said a senior police officer.

According to the police, Kumar was part of a small retinue of cash management agency CMS employees entrusted the responsibility of depositing cash in ATM machines in the central Delhi area.

Around 7:30 pm, after having deposited the said cash, Kumar and his colleagues had gone to the Bangla Sweet House for a snack.

“They took a token and stood patently in line for jalebis but, according to Kumar, Satyendra refused to notice them and seemed bent upon serving people in ‘boots and suits’ instead of him and his colleagues as they stood in the queue,” the officer said.

“When Kumar tried to pull Satyendra up for his behaviour, an argument broke out between them with the latter being shot square in the head for making a regional slur against Kumar,” the officer added.

Kumar had been arrested and was booked for murder under relevant sections.

“The incident is most unfortunate and we offer our deepest condolences to the victim’s family. We wish to clarify that CMS Info Systems is a payments and cash management firm and not a security company. Security services are outsourced to specialised firms which have all the requisite approvals from law enforcement agencies. In this incident, the concerned gunman is an employee of Ms. Orion Securities and acted on his own. The incident occurred post completion of their operational duties for the day,” read a statement released by CMS.
