Jagat Singh Tonk, an AAP leader belonging to the Valmiki community, has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Tonk, an IRS officer, had taken voluntary retirement to join the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

BJP sources say Tonk’s presence will help the party in getting support from the Valmiki community in the North West constituency.

Tonk, a resident of Paschim Vihar, has a significant following in the Valmiki community and he had helped AAP to win many seats in the assembly elections.

Once a rickshaw puller, Tonk was with the customs department for the past 36 years.

“My father was a sweeper and I have been honoured several times by the Valmiki community in Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. After joining AAP, I realized that they are not keen on eradicating corruption,” he said.

“To do something meaningful for the country, I have now joined BJP,” he said, justifying his switch to the saffron party.
