The Youth Association for Transforming Nation (YATN), a Kullu-based NGO, has supported state chief minister Virbhadra Singh for levying additional tax on the sale of tobacco.
In a communication sent to the CM, Gaurav Bhardwaj, president of YATN, has lauded the CM for taking the decision to levy additional tax on tobacco.
In the letter, Bhardwaj added that YATN had also been raising its voice against tobacco for the past some time in Kullu valley by launching the anti-tobacco campaign with the active participation of the local youth.
YATN president further added that the present generation was getting addicted to tobacco and during the anti-tobacco drive, the youth was being made aware of the ill-effects of consuming tobacco.
Bhardwaj said if the price of tobacco was hiked, it would certainly lead to decline in the number of those consuming tobacco.
He further said public places in the state had already witnessed a considerable decline in the number of those consuming tobacco with the efforts of the state government and several NGOs.
Bhardwaj hoped that with the united efforts of all, the hill state would certainly become a tobacco-free state.
“Though some tobacco companies may put pressure on the government to roll back levy of additional taxes on tobacco, YATN has started a signature campaign to urge the government to hike the prices of tobacco,” said Bhardwaj.
