Tainted godman Nityananda Swami surrendered before the district court on Wednesday and sought anticipatory bail in connection with an assault case against him. The court postponed the bail plea hearing for Thursday.
Police, meanwhile continued to search his Bidadi Ashram for the second day.
Nityananda, who had gone missing on Friday after a case of assault and threat to life was registered against him, came to the court in a Kerala-registered SUV. Soon after news spread of his presence in the court, curious onlookers started gathering.
Senior police officials, however, whisked Nityananda to an undisclosed destination.
Nityananda appeared in court within hours after his ashram announced he would return on Thursday and the Karnataka HC adjourned to June 15 hearing on his plea seeking quashing of the fresh FIR against him.
Already facing rape charges, Nityananda has been out on bail after his arrest in 2010. On Friday, he and his followers were booked for allegedly assaulting a mediaperson during a press conference regarding allegations of sexual abuse against Nityananda. The Nityananda Dhyanapeetha, meanwhile, said he had been provided security and not been arrested.
