Ahead of the July 16 hearing, the Gujarat Police CID led by Inspector General Geetha Johri on Thursday submitted its Action Taken Report in the Supreme Court, promising to file the chargesheet in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case within 10 days.

The report submitted in a sealed cover did not have any final word on Sohrabuddin’s wife Kausar Bi, who is also suspected to have been killed, sources said. They said an arrest has been made and the accused was being interrogated about the death of Bi and the disposal of her body.

“The interrogation could be a turning point,” they added.

A PTI report from Ahmedabad quoted a police official saying: "As of now there is no political link to the murder of Sohrabuddin. The CID has probed into various allegations regarding the role of politicians of both Gujarat and Rajasthan but nothing has emerged in this area yet."

Three senior police officers, former DIG DB Vanzara, former SP (CID) Rajkumar Pandyan and former SP of Alwar Dinesh MN are facing criminal charges in the case.

Gujarat had earlier admitted Kausar Bi was killed and burnt by the accused officials, a few days after Sohrabuddin’s encounter in November 2005.

In its last ATR, the Gujarat Government told the court that efforts were on to trace her remains. A well at Illol in Sabarkantha District had been dug up and the samples sent to Forensic Science Laboratory, Gandhinagar.

On May 17, while declining to hand over the probe to the CBI, the court had said: “we may keep in mind that under the law, there is a presumption that if the dead body is not found or the person concerned is not found for seven years, only then the said person can be presumed to be dead. From the record, till today no proof of death of Kausar Bi has been brought on record,” the Bench said.
