The linking of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat to Hindu terror, which has created a storm over Aseemanand’s alleged interview to The Caravan magazine, was not there in his statement before the magistrate.

According to The Caravan, Aseemanand said the instructions had been given at a meeting held in Gujarat’s Dangs district in July 2005. “Go ahead with the attacks, but do not link it to the RSS,” apparently was Bhagwat’s key instruction to Sunil Joshi, the alleged kingpin of the Hindu extremists responsible for half-a-dozen blasts.

In his statement before a magistrate, Aseemanand had spoken about the same meeting, but he didn’t mention Bhagwat’s name. Instead, he spoke about Indresh Kumar, Bhagwat’s RSS colleague.

Kumar, Aseemanand said, had instructed him to focus on his work among tribals and Sunil was given the responsibility about the “work they were talking about”.

It was also decided that they would help Sunil. But now, Aseemanand apparently said Bhagwat was present along with Indresh. “It’s important that it be done. But don’t link this to the Sangh. Because this not the ideology of the Sangh,” Bhagwat said according to Aseemanand.
