It was a story straight out of a masala thriller — a tale of infidelity, death and deception.

Chandra Mohan Sharma, the RTI activist and AAP member who was arrested for murdering a man to fake his death, told the police that he was unhappy with his married life and wanted to live with an woman from the same locality.

“After staging his death, he moved to Bangalore, shaved his head and changed his name.

After a few days, he called the woman and convinced her to come and stay with him in Bangalore. She went missing on June 7. Sharma had in fact returned to Delhi to fetch her,” said Preetinder Singh, senior superintendent of police. In Bangalore, he started working for Honda Motorcycles with forged documents.

He was paid `9,000 but earlier he would get over `40,000 when he worked for Honda Siel Cars India Limited in Greater Noida, the police said. After a couple of months when he started going through a financial crunch and could not support the woman, he realised he had made a mistake.

He started calling the woman’s family without revealing his identity, saying their daughter was spotted in Bangalore, so that they could take her away.Sharma told the police that his brother-in-law Videsh had helped him in his plan.

“It was not possible for Chandra Mohan to stage his death alone so he convinced Videsh.

He narrated his domestic problem to him and expressed his desire to stay with the other woman. He said that he would stage his death so that his wife could get a job and earn money for the family,” said Singh. Videsh fell for his plan.

A month ago, the police began to suspect that the activist might have staged his death. When the woman went missing, the police during probe found that her SIM was registered in Sharma’s name and he frequently called her.

Sharma’s his family was supposed to get `36 lakh as claim from Honda Siel after his death. The company had already paid `20 lakh and was about to make the rest of the payment when the police got leads that Sharma was alive.

The police booked Sharma under different sections of the IPC, including murder. “We will arrest Videsh as he was one of the conspirators.

We have found no role of the woman so we have not arrested her. We are yet to find out if the wife knew about his plan but so far we have given her a clean chit,” said SinghThe police will seek Sharma’s custody after he is produced in court on Friday. They will take permission to conduct a narco analysis on Sharma.
