Seven students of Army Public School were injured, three critically with a 12-year-old boy losing a leg, after their school bus hit a speeding truck here on Thursday morning.

The injured are aged between six and 14 years, the police said. Doctors had to amputate Karan Singh’s right leg and were trying to save the other one, which is also badly injured. The student is on life support.
Compounding the tragedy was the fact that the school was open in violation of an order for all schools to shut down (from class 1 to 8) till January 18 due to the extreme cold.
Following the accident, Gautam Budh Nagar district magistrate Hiralal Gupta issued a notice to Army Public School. “The school will have to explain why students were called to school. We have been sending reminders to schools on the matter. We will take necessary action against the school,” he said.

With many private schools in Noida and Ghaziabad still open, the administrations have decided to act against them.

The school bus, ferrying 37 students from Indirapuram, was crossing the sector 31-25 intersection in Noida at 7.25 am when the speeding truck jumped a light as it approached from the other side and hit the bus’ emergency door. Two students seated near the door, Karan and Navin Yadav, were critically injured.

A PCR van patrolling the area reached the spot and took the children, all boys, to hospital. The truck driver, Banwari, was arrested, the vehicle seized and an FIR registered.

“The transport wing of the army has lodged a complaint against the truck driver. We have extended our cooperation to the injured students and their parents,” Army Public School principal Anita Shah said.

Karan is being treated at Kailash hospital in Noida while Navin and Harish, also severely injured, have been shifted to the Army Research and Referral Hospital in Delhi.
