Congress president Sonia Gandhi Wednesday said an I-T notice to her son Rahul Gandhi and herself regarding the National Herald case was mere “political vindictiveness” and a “witch-hunt”.

Sonia and Rahul Gandhi have been summoned to appear before a Delhi court on August 7 after a complaint by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy. He alleged that the Gandhis floated a firm called Young Indian (YI), which acquired Associated Journals (AJ) — publisher of the National Herald.

Swamy alleged that the Congress used party funds to enable YI to buy AJ and acquire its assets worth thousands of crores. The IT notice, issued on Tuesday, asks how YI got the money.

Defiant, Sonia said: “The political witch-hunt will only help us come back faster and fight harder… we have done nothing wrong.”

Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said the I-T notice and earlier actions were going to be given “vigorous, robust and comprehensive” reply.

Singhvi said the case was “absolutely vendetta politics” and shows the “fear and insecurity” of the new government.

The BJP, however, dismissed the charge. “We don’t believe in political vendetta. But if a law has been broken, there will be consequences,” said union minister Prakash Javadekar.

But Singhvi went on to say that history of politics showed how “vendetta and pettiness” boomeranged. “This is cheap politics and history shows what happens when one resorts to vendetta.”
