Police said district voluntary force (DVF) constable Narendra Kandapan gunned down his father-in-law Jalandhar Samarlia, mother-in-law Hemlata Samarlia, brother-in-law Mithun Samarlia, sister-in-law Rachana Samarlia and a driver, who was with them in his rented house in Koraput town, before killing himself with his service AK-47 rifle early on Tuesday morning.

Kandapan’s wife and two-year-old daughter escaped his shooting spree.

The 26-year-old constable’s in-laws had come to his house the previous night to sort out a quarrel between him and his wife.

“The motive of the crime appears to be a family dispute. Investigations are on and further details awaited,” inspector general of police, south-west range, Yaswant Jethwa said.

Koraput is about 500 km southwest of state capital Bhubaneswar.

The DVF, which recruits local tribal youth to counter Maoist activities, has been created specially by the Odisha government.
