A case was registered against Italy born Padma awardee Odissi dancer Ileana Citaristi for allegedly misbehaving with a minor student in the dance school she runs here, police said on Wednesday.
“We have registered the case on Tuesday on the basis of a complaint lodged by Kamala Kanta Das, father of 10-year-old Dibyarupa Das who attended Citaristi’s dance school,” Lingaraj police station Baidhar Baliarsingh said.
According to Das’s complaint, Citaristi assaulted Dibyarupa on Sunday while she was taking Odissi dance lesson. He alleged his daughter suffered injury in one of her fingers, knee and back, but when he enquired the matter from Citaristi she misbehaved with him too.

Citaristi (55) has been booked under Section 341 (wrongful restraint), Section 321 (voluntary causing hurt) of Indian Penal Code and under Section 23 of the Juvenile Justice Act (cruelty to juvenile or child).

Citaristi, who was conferred on Padma Shri – India’s fourth highest civilian award – in 2006 for her contribution to Odissi, refuted the charge. She said she asked the girl to leave the class as she was very indisciplined but her father had created an issue out of nothing.

“It is absolutely a false case. I have asked the police to come during class time so that they can collect evidence from all other students,” Citaristi told HT.

In July last year, Citaristi had kicked off a row after she alleged two servitors of Puri Temple pushed her down the chariot of Lord Jagannath during Rath Yatra after she refused to pay them.
