A man beheaded his cousin in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district following a quarrel over stealing asbestos sheets and came to surrender with the severed head, the police said on Saturday.

The incident took place in Kaliasole, a remote a tribal village around 250km northwest of state capital Bhubaneswar, on Friday.

The police said Gaya Dehuri, 45, and his uncle’s son, Ajay Dehuri, 40, were neighbours and did not have cordial relations for a long time.

Gaya left for work on Friday morning after a heated exchange of words with Ajay, whom he accused of stealing his asbestos sheets.

After returning home in the afternoon, Gaya found Ajay was still quarrelling with his wife. In a fit of rage, he beheaded Ajay with an axe.

“We have arrested the accused, seized the murder weapon and started an investigation,” local police station inspector-in-charge Ramakanta Muduli said.
