A man locked his 90-year-old mother in his house in Uttar Pradesh’s Allahabad and left for Patna in the neighbouring state of Bihar with his wife and children to celebrate Chhath festival.
Residents in the Himmatganj locality said Vinay Kashyap purchased a house in the area about three months ago and moved in with his mother, wife Pushpa, and three children. Pushpa hails from Patna in Bihar.
Kashyap’s neighbours found the house locked and assumed that his family might have gone to Bihar to celebrate the four-day Chhath festival during which devotees worship the Sun. They said the family hardly interacted with anyone in the locality.
On Monday, Virendra Sonkar, a relative of local corporator, noticed a woman waving her hand from the window on the first floor of the house. Sonkar raised an alarm after which neighbours informed the police control room.
Khuldabad Police reached the spot and climbed up the balcony of the house with the help of a ladder. They broke the locks and rescued the woman. She was not in a condition to give out her name.
Police found a few packets of biscuits and some food in the room but neighbours said she was too weak to eat on her own.
Inspector KK Yadav said the woman was getting her husband’s pension.
“It is an inhuman act and action will be taken against Vinay and his wife. Residents of the area are taking care of the woman and they have informed us that they had often heard Vinay and Pushpa abusing her,” Yadav added.
