The NDA government will continue with some of the “good schemes” of the UPA era, albeit with some structural changes, rural development minister Nitin Gadkari said on Tuesday.

Citing the example of rural job scheme MGNREGA, he said while the government will continue with it, the Centre has ordered the reversal of the wage material ratio from existing 60:40 to 41:59. Speaking at a panel discussion on Modi government’s 100 days, he also said the scheme would focus on the backward states. HT on July 7 had first reported the two major changes in the scheme.

“We will continue with good schemes of the UPA and make them better,” he said.

Justifying the reversal of the wage material ratio, the minister in a statement said works like check dam construction, de-silting of traditional water bodies, minor irrigation tanks and canals require a combination of wage labour and machinery. The discretion to change the ratio however remains with the states.

“Increase in the skilled percentage from 40% to 49% is enabling provision which empowers states , if they so wish to do part of work of check dams, minor irrigation tanks with machinery, while doing balance 51% on muster payment to labour,” the statement said.
