The Noida police on Sunday arrested a person for allegedly making extortion calls to the chief medical officer (CMO) of Gautam Buddh Nagar.
The accused has been identified as Yoginder, who was arrested from Bhatta village.
According to the police, there was a property dispute between Yoginder and his friend Ishtiyaq. Yoginder purchased a new mobile phone and a SIM card on October 9 in the name of one Pappu and called Ishtiyaq from the new number.
Then the accused started making threatening calls to the CMO.
"It was a tricky plan. We first contacted Ishtiyaq after tracing the number. He gave us the information about Yoginder," said SSP Praveen Kumar.
"He is in police custody. We are trying to find out other details from him," said Kumar.
Earlier CMO Dr RK Garg said that he did not receive any extortion call on Sunday. "I did not receive any call today," said Garg.
The CMO had written to the district magistrate and the senior superintendent of police over the matter.
"I received at least nine extortion calls between October 11 and October 13. I also wrote to the Uttar Pradesh chief minister and other senior officials in the government in this regard," Garg had said on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the district magistrate maintained that the police protection would be provided to the CMO even after the notorious caller was arrested.
"We have deployed two more gunmen for his security. He can keep them till the time he wants to," said MKS Sundaram, district magistrate.
The CMO had claimed that Rakesh Bhati, a noted criminal, had called on Thursday night and demanded Rs. 10 lakh. He also threatened Garg with dire consequences if the matter was reported to the police.
According to police sources, Bhati, a resident of Dujana village, is a member of Amit Kasana gang. The gang is involved in several incidents of land grabbing and extortion.
On Saturday, a similar call was made to an official in Dankaur from the same number, demanding the same amount. Besides, Sonu Rastogi, a sub-divisional officer in the electricity department, has also received an extortion call.
