An argument broke out between the women and the four accused after one of the women allegedly kicked a dog belonging to the accused, the police said. The women, belonging to the Tangkhul Naga community of Manipur, were subsequently beaten up. The women, one of whom works in a mall, also alleged that their cash and valuables were robbed by the four accused.

The arrested, identified as Prem Chand, is the owner of the dog.

The crime occurred on January 24, five days before the death of Nido Taniam, also spelt as Tania, the 19-year-old son of an Arunachal Pradesh MLA, who was allegedly beaten up by a group of men in the Lajpat Nagar area.

The police have been accused of inaction in the case, with the women being allegedly threatened and intimidated after the crime by the four accused.

“Till Sunday, no one arrested though FIR was registered on January 25. Meanwhile these people threatened the women,” said Athot Shinglai, president of the Tangkhul Student’s Union in Delhi.

“The women were told that they would not be able to do anything to the accused,” Shinglai added.

The police, however, denied the charge, with Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat saying, “A case of assault and outraging the women’s modesty was registered on the same day. We added the charges of molestation, causing hurt during robbery and section 3(11) of SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities act in the FIR on January 29.”

Police are now looking for the three other accused, including a juvenile, who were allegedly involved the crime.
