One person was killed and 12 others were injured when a bomb hidden in an auto-van by the ULFA militants went off leading to explosion of three cooking gas cylinders in nearby roadside shops at Bamunimaidan on Saturday.

One person died and 12 were injured in the explosion in the auto van which was reduced to smithereens at the Railway Colony Market at around 11.45 am, city senior Superintendent of Police Surinder Kumar told PTI.

The market is adjacent to the Northeast Frontier Railway goods yard station, he added. Under the impact of the explosion, the cooking gas cylinders in three roadside shops caught fire, while glass panes in nearby buildings broke.

All casualties occurred at the Railway Colony market. There were no reports of people being injured in the shops. The type of the explosive used was not immediately known and it could be either a programmable time device or an improvised explosive device (IED), police said.

The area was cordoned off and the injured were immediately rushed to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital. At the hospital, relatives and friends of the victims were seen pleading with doctors to treat their kin first.
