Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, when asked about the prospects of the JD(U) joining hands with the Congress, said on Monday it was premature to talk about it.

"My immediate concern is how to go ahead, fulfilling the trust the people had reposed in us in the assembly elections of 2010," he said.

"I am loaded with this responsibility and will make all effort to fulfil the promise made to the people."

Kumar also brushed aside criticism that he had treated his own mentor, George Fernandes, in the same way Narendra Modi had allegedly steamrollered his guru LK Advani.

"I had offered the ailing socialist icon and founder of the Samata Party a seat in the Rajya Sabha after he was pushed to unsuccessfully contest the Muzaffarpur seat in 2009."

"In the JD(U) we are all highly mindful of the respect we owe party elders. Even today I keep tabs on Fernandes's health and pray for his good health."

In the same vein, Kumar said, "Disregard for elders is a trait more routinely ascribed to the new era of BJP leaders, who cannot attract new allies and think they can ignore the old alliance. In Indian culture, we do not show disrespect to elders."
