In one of the sharpest rebuttals to Islamabad’s attempt to blame New Delhi for a weak case against the 26/11 masterminds, New Delhi on Saturday criticised the neighbour, pointing out that 99% of the evidence for the attack – planned, financed and executed from its soil – was in Pakistan and not India.

Pakistan’s foreign office had on Friday attributed the slow pace of the trial to lack of adequate evidence from India. The attempt to lay the blame at India’s doorstep followed US President Barack Obama nudging Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif to speed up the trial.

“The planning of the dastardly Mumbai terrorist attack was hatched in Pakistan, from the training of the terrorists to the financing of the conspiracy. It, therefore, follows that 99% of the evidence will be available in Pakistan”, external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin responded on Saturday.

New Delhi is also irked at Pakistan for not acknowledging the five “attested documents” handed over on October 15, as demanded by Pakistan’s judicial commission, that would carry the case forward. Akbaruddin said the Indian side had “cooperated” with the judicial commission and handed over all relevant information to the Pakistani high commission on October 14-15.

At the highest levels, Pakistan has been assuring India of bringing the attackers to justice at the earliest.
