Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Wednesday that there was “no scope of Pakistan winning a war (against India) in my lifetime.”

His remark, during a navy day reception, was in response to his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif allegedly saying the Kashmir issue could trigger a fourth war with India anytime, a statement subsequently denied by Sharif’s office.

The Pakistani newspaper Dawn had quoted Sharif as saying “Kashmir is a flash point and can trigger a fourth war between the two nuclear powers anytime,” during his address on Tuesday to the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir Council.

Sharif’s office, however, called the report “baseless, incorrect and based on malafide intentions” and said the PM wanted any conflict between the two countries to be resolved through peaceful means.

Sharif had also said that he desired to see Kashmir free of Indian occupation during his lifetime.
