“I did this as much out of my love for her as to save her life. She would not have lived had I not agreed to marry her,” the groom told HT.

On Tuesday, the two of them were visiting Mandar Hill, 290 km from Patna, when they were accosted by some shepherds. While the man was beaten up, the woman was raped by all three men, one after another.

The wedding took place with court approval at a temple located on Mandar hill, a little distance away from the spot of the brutal rape.

While the girl’s family was present for it, the groom’s side chose to stay away.

The local BJP MLA, Sonelal Hembrom, was among those who witnessed the wedding.

While the groom came in for praise for his “noble act”, he himself confessed that the fear of “unhappy consequences” had also motivated him. “I did not want to end up in jail for what happened and what could have happened thereafter.”

Baunsi SHO Ashok Kumar said two of the rapists had been arrested and identified by the victim. “They will be chargesheeted within a day of two.”
