Majdar Sheikh alias Babu Sheikh, 26, allegedly took the girl to a jute field and raped her while she was returning from school. The incident took place at Balidear village, about 60km from Berhampore.

Sheikh’s father is the TMC general secretary of Raninagar block 2 while his stepmother Rabia Bibi is its working president. She is also contesting the rural polls from Raninagar gram panchayat 2.

After returning home, the girl narrated the incident to her family. Her parents then lodged a complaint with the police. “Based on the complaint, we arrested Sheikh,” Murshidabad superintendent of police Humayun Kabir said.

Sheikh, however, claimed he was impotent and couldn’t rape anybody. He told the police that both his wives left him because of that reason.

“Sheikh’s parents have nothing to do with the rape case,” TMC district president MD Ali said.
