Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s guest house will be Narendra Modi’s new home.

Modi shifted into his official residence complex at 7, Race Course Road (RCR) on Friday morning — with Badri, his cook of many years and personal assistants in tow — but for now has preferred to live in the bungalow that his predecessor used as a guest house. While Singh and his family lived in 3, RCR, the 7, RCR bungalow was the office.

“As of now the PM has chosen to stay in 5, RCR. But he might later shift to the 3, RCR bungalow. The bungalow was vacated by former PM Manmohan Singh on May 26 and soon after we started renovation work. It would be ready for occupation within a fortnight,” said an urban development ministry official.

The 7, RCR complex comprises five bungalows. Two of them are used to accommodate the Special Protection Group. The other three — bungalows 3, 5, and 7 — are used to house the Prime Ministers.

With no specific requests for changes in the house décor, Central Public Works Department (CPWD), the agency under the urban development ministry responsible for the upkeep of central government bungalows, just dabbed a fresh coat of paint and changed the upholstery at 5, RCR. “No elaborate makeover was done, just some basic refurbishing,” said a UD ministry official.

Over the years, former prime ministers, including Rajiv Gandhi, IK Gujral, PV Narasimha Rao and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, have switched their residences between 3 and 5, RCR bungalows.
