Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's press conference was a farce and admission of his government's failure to curb corruption and unemployment.

"The PM admits his government failed to control inflation. It proves that his government has failed…He was looking for excuses to prove that he provided good governance…During 2G and coal scams he could have taken steps to stop graft but he didn't," Jaitley told a news conference organised to respond to the PM's remarks.
Jaitely said the PM's press conference was held merely to convey that he won't lead the Congress anymore after 2014 elections.
To a reporter's question, he said he would term Manmohan Singh's tenure a "wasted opportunity".
"From what voters have told, it is bad new for the Congress. And it is because of Manmohan Singh government," the BJP leader said, alluding to the humiliating defeat suffered by the ruling party in four state assembly elections recently.
"In a democracy time doesn't tell, it is the voters who tell us and they tell us most emphatically," Jaitley said, referring to PM's remarks that "history will judge him".
He said the PM's argument that corruption charges against the UPA-1 were wiped out by its victory in 2009 polls can be used by "criminals who win polls".
Reacting to PM's attack on Modi, Jaitley said that since Independence no leader has been subjected to so much scrutiny as Modi.
"Police scrutiny, Supreme Court scrutiny and an investigation by Special Investigation Team and then the high court decision. All these cleared him," the BJP leader said.
"…Congress' Dirty Tricks Department has tried everything to defame Modi…I hope the PM is not part of that department," Jaitley added.
Earlier, the Prime Minister said Modi as PM would spell disaster for the country and the strength of a leader does not lie in "presiding over a massacre".
